And to kick things off properly, we’re giving you a FREE Gluten Free Homity Pie with your next order when you use FREEPIEDAY at checkout. Because nothing says festive chaos like a comfort-filled, veg-packed, lidless beauty landing on your doorstep.
But before you go claiming your freebie, let’s answer the question half the nation asks every winter:
What IS a Homity Pie, and why does Devon care so much about it?
Pull up a chair. This one’s got layers (potato ones).
At its core, the Homity Pie is a rustic, hearty, veggie pie made with potatoes, onions, leeks, cheese and herbs - all baked into an open-topped pastry shell. Creamy, savoury, warming comfort without the faff!
(A pie that doesn’t bother with a lid because it knows it can stand on its own two feet.)
It’s unpretentious. It’s cosy. It’s quietly iconic.
And yes, we’ve made it 100% gluten free without losing its Devon soul (you’re welcome).
The Homity Pie didn’t come from some Michelin-starred kitchen or a Victorian banquet.
It came from resourceful, mud-covered, roll-your-sleeves-up women feeding themselves between shifts on the land.
During WWII, the government sent young women - the Land Girls - to rural farms to keep Britain fed while men were at war. Devon became a hotspot for them, and with rationing biting hard, ingredients like meat, butter and fancy extras were basically mythical creatures.
But potatoes? Onions? A handful of veg and herbs? Those, Devon had in abundance!!
So the Land Girls created a cheap, filling, morale-boosting dish:
the proto-Homity Pie.
It was practical wartime fuel, warming, simple, and made with whatever was available.
Think “make-do-and-mend” but tastier.
After the war, Homity Pies could’ve disappeared quietly into the history books...
But then along came the 1960s and ’70s, the era of:
- Vegetarian cafés
- Denim-clad peace fans
- And at least three acoustic guitars per square mile!
Hippies and veggie pioneers rediscovered Homity Pie and went,
“Oh hey, a cheap, hearty, plant-based pie? Sounds like a vibe.”
Wholefood restaurants like Cranks in London made it famous again. Suddenly this wartime scrapper became a symbol of early vegetarian culture. Comforting, eco-friendly, and deeply unfussy.
The Homity Pie became the OG “wholesome foodie” long before Instagram invented the word.
Fast forwarding to now, we’ve taken that history, the Land Girls, the hippies, the whole Devon attitude - and baked it into a pie that’s:
✔ Gluten free
✔ Vegetarian
✔ Properly seasoned
✔ Comforting as hell
✔ Still lidless (tradition matters)
Our Gluten Free Homity Pie is everything the original stood for, but upgraded for modern tastebuds and modern diets. The potatoes are creamy. The leeks are sweet. The cheese hits just right. And the pastry? Golden, crumbly, GF magic!
Your great-gran, a 1970s hippy, and your gluten-intolerant mate could all agree on this one. That’s the power of a Homity Pie!!
Because it’s Black PieDay, and because we love the Homity Pie maybe more than is socially acceptable:
