It’s National Picnic Week from 17th -25th June 2024, we are absolutely buzzing with excitement! In Medieval times, picnics were extravagant affairs reserved for the nobility, who revelled in outdoor feasts fit for royalty. Or as they called it “banquets on the grass!”! (What a great name!)
Fast forward to the 18th century, and picnics became more casual gatherings that welcomed people from all walks of life to enjoy simple meals alfresco. It's a tradition that's become quintessentially British!
But where did picnic come from? Well, it's all thanks to the French. The term "picnic" is often attributed to the French "pique-nique" or the British "pique à nique," both of which emphasise the fun outdoors of eating outdoors. Over the years, artists and poets have romanticised picnics, depicting them as idyllic gatherings within nature and have created a sense of nostalgia and appreciation for the simpler pleasure of life. Even though they started out as a banquet and a very sort after event!
